What We Do
Since 1988, we have fed offered food to anyone on the street, serving up to 200 people at a time.
Our Mission
The Under the Bridge program was founded in 1988 by Ellen Ott with the simple act of
providing a home cooked meal to those in need under the 281 Highway on San Antonio’s near
eastside. Her efforts soon evolved into a network of good Samaritans as she began coordinating
between different groups to ensure that a group of volunteers was present at the usual time and
location.
Under the Bridge, Inc has continued to this day under the direction of Carl “Bill” and Pam
Holler, regularly helping to feed between 100 and 175 people at a time. Following the
precedent set by Ellen Ott, Bill and Pam work with groups from across the county, enabling
them to contribute to this weekly initiative and to experience the sense of fulfillment that
comes from helping those in need. The organization also regularly provides blankets, hygiene
products, and clothing. Through this approach of collaboration, Under the Bridge has spread
the message of service and altruism to residents of all ages and demographics, regardless of
religion or creed.
How We Work
Under the Bridge coordinates with other local organizations, such as schools, civic groups, or churches, who provide volunteers.
Under the Bridge makes sure that enough volunteers and enough food arrive on time for a Sunday lunch, under the Commerce St. bridge on San Antonio’s westside.
In addition to coordination, Under the Bridge provides guidance, essential supplies, and logistical support to its volunteer groups.
